Institutions vs people
We had a parent teacher conference at the kids school today. The teachers seemed genuinely caring and helpful. I liked them all. At church this past Sunday I really enjoyed seeing some friends I have not talked with in a month or so. People are great...it seems.
However, speaking for myself, the institutions we meet at stink. Schools are too ridged, and churches are just plain weird. Why? All the time, I'm told... it's that they are made up of people!
Then why my personal experience? The people are mostly fine and the organization is not. Could it be something inherent in organizations? That is, something other than the people? Sure, but what? Maybe it's the "other people" :-)
No, it's the inherent nature of organizations, or crowds, or gangs. The group elicits a certain behavior.
Yes, so there is my rambling. I am obviously not a sociologist...however, I still think I'm right.
Can we replace groups? Organizations? Gangs? I think we can. I'll save that for another post.

I think in groups people lose their individuality and instead gravitate to the most "common" denominator. Which makes the group as a whole, an automaton. Everyone is single minded in their pursuit of not rocking the boat and being allowed to stay in the group. So they all say and do the same things. After all, if you fall out of the boat, sometimes it's a long way to shore. People seem to want to be inividuals while remaining a part of something greater than themselves, but I'm not sure that's even possible.
Personally, I'm not a group person, but do well in 1 on 1 situations. Sometims, I feel very isolated, but I'm not willing to "do what it takes" to fit in to the group. Recognizing the fact that it's my choice versus actually being excluded makes it acceptable for me.
Ok, there's my 1.5 cents worth. LOL
schools are ridged? is that like Ruffles? gee, and i always thought they were rigid ;-)
movements can be really cool and dynamic... and people can end up drinking the Kool-Aid.
institutions harden as they try to protect against people doing Bad Things (TM). but there is no fail safe for sin...
smaller groups of people are less given to the excesses of larger groups of people/institutions.
can we replace groups as such? nope. but we can mediate some of their worse effects, and try to amplify the good things...
Yes, schools are "ridged" like a potatoe chip! I mean what I say!
(Did you notice "potatoe"? That is the Dan Quail spelling.) HA,HA!!
Anyhow, my spell checker didn't catch that one. Thanks...
Lisa,
That's a cool post. Also, I can tell you like people.
There is an answer to this problem!
I'm trying to figure out how to articulate it with out sounding weird.
