Moving Right Along....Unlimited Corporate Political Contributions...

This year, in a land mark decision; the Supreme court ruled (in Citizens United vs The Federal Election Commission) that publicly owned corporations can make unlimited contributions to political action committees. I do not understand their reasoning. It had to do with a corporation being a "person". I understand they (corporations) are "separate legal entities", but not "persons". They don't vote for example. The court also considered it a free speech issue...incidentally voting is an expression of free speech...Hmmm.

I however, am not here to pass judgment on the supreme court! They are simply hearing a case and interpreting the Constitution. That said, this is a situation we should not let stand as US citizens. I have worked for a corporation of some type by whole adult life. I can tell you what kind of "person" they are with great accuracy. They are essentially a selfish, self perpetuating "person". They give only what they have to give. They modestly benefit masses, and greatly benefit a few. They consider their own perpetuation before every other consideration. They are essentially amoral. They create a modern aristocracy...For example the CEO of one publicly held corporation made $50,000,000 last year. The corporation laid off tens of thousands of people in order to pay him. (It has NOT always been this way...this super upper class has developed during my adult life...save it for another post, right?)

This will not be changed by the legislature. Politicians stand to make millions (indirectly) from this judgment. They (the Congress, and Senate) are essentially corrupt bodies, or in the least have designed a corrupt process for them selves. They are dominated by special interests, selling government access to the highest bidder.

What we need is a popular movement...you and me...
We need a Constitutional Amendment.

Last; consider this, corporations are publicly owned. Therefore, foreign governments can own them, and more effectively buy US politicians, to promote their own foreign countries interests. This is a serious situation.

What should we do? There are a couple things we can do right now. Sign on-line petitions, and get informed, and involved according to your own time and conscience in the matter. Check out these web sites right now, if you have a minute...

We are an nonprofit representing the Azerbaijani-American community, and are trying to do research on health care, taxation and social security issues. Basically, through our research, we are overwhelmed with tons of information, and in order to be able to clearly and concisely formulate the choices to our members, we would be very interested in seeing some one-pagers outlining the pro's and con's on these topics. It would be also interesting to see what are other similar nonprofits thinking and doing. Being a grassroots organization, with a diverse membership, we need to be able to "keep it short" and easy to understand for busy people who don't particularly like or enjoy politics. If you have some tips, pointers and such information, could you please email it to me directly , or via our website www.USAzeris.org
